Hardest hit by the recession with the nation’s highest unemployment at 30.2%, 500 direct and 500 indirect jobs will be created in the Imperial County to support this new port.

Calexico, California – 09/10/09 – Companies in the western USA and Canada who ship goods into Mexico now have reason to rejoice: an international rail port is expanding in Southern California that will cut up to 2,000 miles off the overland shipping to Mexico, which in the past was only available halfway across the country in Texas. In the process, 500 much-needed jobs will be created in the Imperial Valley, which gained notoriety recently as “America’s Recession Capital,”

Ideally suited to serve shippers in the western USA and Canada, Calexico California is on the border adjacent to Mexicali, the state capital of Baja California. This large city is served by a top quality rail lane installed by Mexico’s leading rail company, Ferromex. Along with support from Grupo INTRA, one of Mexico’s leading manufacturers and distributors, the area has been expanded to move thousands of shipments through this port. Calexico is the southernmost city in California, and its proximity to major freeways, rail lines and the border, makes access to the Mexico rail system fast and easy.  Rail shipping is considered much faster and safer than driving trucks individually into Mexico destinations.

TBM Carriers, with their own fleet of over 150 trucks, has been moving products directly from US distribution centers into Mexico through the Laredo, Texas port. Founder Jose Villarreal realized that the trip to Texas added up to 2 days extra to the shipments from the western states. “I wanted to find a safe way for companies to move their products destined for Mexico into the rail system as quickly as possible, and I realized Calexico would be the perfect location. And this gives us a chance to create California jobs where they are needed most: in the Imperial Valley.”

Adding to the 500 direct jobs will be an estimated 500 indirect jobs created in industries that grow to support the new port, including warehousing, clerical and loading jobs.  Villarreal explains, “Once companies realize the greater efficiency of using this new West Coast Gateway, and the whopping 15-30% savings they get by using this port, we expect to see a network of distribution centers for large manufacturers grow in the immediate area to support the operation, just as they have in other major international ports.”
